SEOUL, South Korea (AP) _ Hundreds of South Korean protesters including former sex slaves rallied in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul on Wednesday, saying that an apology issued by the prime minister for Japan's past colonial rule of Korea was not enough. Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan apologized in Tokyo on Tuesday for the «enormous damage and suffering» for his country's occupation of Korea and expressed «deep remorse» in a statement approved by his Cabinet. Kan also said his country would soon return some Korean cultural artifacts, including historical documents, that it acquired while ruling the region. The apology comes ahead of the 100-year anniversary of the start of the colonial period, which began on Aug. 29, 1910, and ended with Japan's defeat in World War II. The peninsula was later divided into separately governed regions, resulting in the communist North and capitalist South. Seoul acknowledged the apology as «the Japanese government's willingness to overcome the unfortunate history between Korea and Japan and to develop bright bilateral relations in the future,» Foreign Ministry spokesman Kim Young-sun said Tuesday. Kan also spoke to South Korean President Lee Myung-bak by phone Tuesday, Lee's office said. «What is important is how Japan will carry it (the apology) out with action» in the future, Lee said, according to a statement by his office. However, some said the apology wasn't enough, citing the men who served as front-line soldiers and worked in slave-labor conditions, and the women forced to serve as prostitutes in brothels operated by the military. Older Koreans still remember atrocities committed by Japan, and the issue remains sensitive decades later. More than 400 activists and victims gathered in front of the Japanese Embassy in Seoul on Wednesday, demanding legal reparation for victims. They said the apology should be backed up by specific measures such as reparations for victims, prosecution of wrongdoers and a record of the Japanese military's history of sexual slavery in Japanese textbooks. «You have no conscience!» shouted Kim Bok-dong, an 84-year-old former sex slave to Japanese troops. Some held signs reading: «Justice for sexual slavery survivors,» and shouted «Return the honor and rights of the comfort women!» «The Japanese government must provide substantial reparations, rather than another case of empty sweet talk,» said Nam Young-jin, chairman of the South Korean chapter of Amnesty International, who attended the protest. Japanese leaders have apologized in the past for aggression against its Asian neighbors. An apology in 1995 marking the 50th anniversary of the end of World War II has become the government's official stance.
THE ASSEMBLY ist klasse.
